Cosmo First Ltd: From Plastic Wraps to Pet Shops – The Reinvention Circus πŸŽͺπŸΆπŸ“¦

1. At a Glance

Cosmo First, once just another BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) film churner, is now juggling packaging, chemicals, adhesives, andβ€”wait for itβ€”pet care. FY25 revenue stood at β‚Ή3,005 Cr with profits of β‚Ή145 Cr, giving an OPM of 10.4%. Stock at β‚Ή992 trades at a reasonable 17.8x P/E, but debt of β‚Ή1,438 Cr makes it look more leveraged than a student’s Zerodha account. Q1 FY26 revenue was β‚Ή800 Cr, with PAT up 38.5% YoY. Packaging pays the bills, but Zigly (its pet-care arm) is the noisy child demanding attention.

2. Introduction

Founded in 1981 as Cosmo Films, the company has grown into India’s largest BOPP film exporter and the world’s largest producer of thermal lamination films. Basically, if you’ve ever bought chips, chocolates, or even a shampoo sachet, chances are Cosmo’s films wrapped it up.

But why stop at packaging when you can also sell dog shampoo? In FY22, Cosmo decided plastic wasn’t enough and launched Zigly, its omni-channel pet-care brand. They now run experience centres, have an app with 5,900 SKUs, and even want 100+ stores by FY26. From Cadbury to canine biscuits, Cosmo wants it all.

On the manufacturing front, they’re flexing with the world’s largest BOPP line (capex β‚Ή350 Cr, capacity +67,000 MT) and the world’s largest CPP line (capex β‚Ή140 Cr). Add to that new chemicals, adhesives, rigid packaging, and their favourite PowerPoint buzzwordβ€”β€œspecialty films.”

The bigger question: Can Cosmo really balance films, chemicals, and pet care? Or is this the corporate version of trying to binge Netflix, gym, and write a novelβ€”all in one week?

3. Business Model – WTF Do They Even Do?

Cosmo First runs a buffet of businesses:

  1. Packaging Films (50% of revenue): The bread-and-butter. BOPP, barrier, pouching, lidding, and overwrap films. Used everywhere from Maggi packets to Pepsi bottles.
  2. Lamination Films (24%): The β€œshiny cover” of the print worldβ€”used in books, publishing, graphic art. Fun fact: they’re the world leader here.
  3. Label Films (10%): Those glossy wraps around Coke and shampoo bottles. Small share, but big global positioning.
  4. Industrial Films (16%): Films for tapes, textiles, long-lasting printing.
  5. New Bets:
    • Rigid Plastics β†’ FMCG packaging.
    • Masterbatches β†’ Additives for plastics.
    • Adhesives β†’ Niche launches.
    • Pet Care (Zigly): Experience centres, grooming, pet food, clinicsβ€”basically the β€œUrban Company for pets.”

Cosmo’s 4 plants (3 India, 1 Korea) churn out 196,000 MT of BOPP films, 40,000 MT thermal lamination, 30,000 MT metalized, and now scaling to 277,000 MT with the new line.

So yeahβ€”they make the wrap, the glue, and now want to wash your dog too.
