The Backstreet Boys’ net worth: Who’s the richest boy bander?

With more than 130 million records sold, the Backstreet Boys churned out some of the catchiest songs of the ‘90s and 2000s, helping fan the flames for the all-male, predominantly white pop groups known as “boy bands.”

Since their smooth harmonies, synchronized dance moves, and off-stage dramas perpetually kept them in the headlines, the Backstreet Boys helped establish a blueprint for how to create and market successful boy bands—one that would inspire later groups like NSYNC, 98 Degrees, and One Direction.

They also became one of the most successful pop groups in history and one of only a handful of musicians to achieve the milestone of having multiple diamond-certified albums, sharing rarefied air with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, and Garth Brooks. They launched 12 world tours—and even briefly joined forces with another successful boy band, New Kids on the Block, to create the supergroup NKOTBSB.

The Backstreet Boys’ popularity endures today. Their 2017–2019 “Backstreet Boys: Larger than Life” residency at Planet Hollywood became the fastest-selling Vegas residency ever, according to Fox 5 Las Vegas, and in 2025, they launched a new residency at The Sphere, entitled “Into the Millennium,” which showcases their biggest hits with immersive visuals and The Sphere’s cutting-edge technology—billed as a futuristic, “spaceship-themed” experience.

On August 13, 2025, the Backstreet Boys announced a seven-date extension in December 2025 and January 2026 for their red-hot, sold-out show. Tickets will be available to the general public on August 22, 2025, and are also expected to sell quickly.

What is the Backstreet Boys’ net worth in 2025?

Today, the combined total of the Backstreet Boys’ net worth is $200 million (as of August 2025), according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Despite their having achieved such extensive commercial success, however, it may come as a surprise to learn that Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, A.J. McLean, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson missed out on a significant portion of the initial wealth the Backstreet Boys generated.

Who’s the richest Backstreet Boy?

In fact, you might say that the richest member of the Backstreet Boys didn’t even perform on stage with the group—he was their manager, an heavy set, middle-aged introvert named Lou Pearlman.

The Backstreet Boys were formed as a result of open casting calls in 1992 and 1993 that attracted hundreds of hopefuls to Pearlman’s blimp hanger in Orlando, Florida.

The cousin of musician Art Garfunkel, New York native Pearlman was inspired to enter the music industry and began managing bands while a teenager; however, he built his wealth by creating a helicopter taxi service in Manhattan and later formed Airship International, a company that leased blimps to corporations.

Fascinated by the success of New Kids on the Block, however, Pearlman also launched a record label, Trans Continental Records, in an attempt to duplicate their business model. The $3 million he spent searching for the Backstreet Boys resulted in five star-powered performers: Carter, Dorough, McLean, Littrell, and Richardson—but it also paid off in dividends for Pearlman, since he was listed in a clause of their contract as the band’s “sixth member,” their manager/producer, and thus entitled to one-sixth of their earnings.

Additionally, Pearlman replicated his business model to create another popular boy band, NSYNC, as well as a number of other bands, including O-Town and LFO, and solo acts like Aaron Carter and Jordan Knight—profiting handsomely from them as well.

At the height of his career, Pearlman was worth $300 million, according to Entrepreneur.

But then it all came crashing down.

In 2008, Pearlman was convicted of masterminding one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in U.S. history, one that defrauded investors of hundreds of millions of dollars through investments in companies that simply did not exist.

Not only that; he was sued by his bands for misrepresenting their earnings. In 1998, Littrell hired a lawyer to investigate why he and the other members of the Backstreet Boys had only received $300,000 for their efforts while their label made millions.

The Backstreet Boys’ lawsuit ended with an out-of-court settlement in 1998, and the exact details of remuneration remain unknown. However, the settlement did allow the Backstreet Boys to separate from Pearlman and Trans Continental Records. Later that year, the band signed a new, $60 million deal with Jive Records, which was known for its artist-friendly management.

And as for Pearlman? After pleading guilty to conspiracy, money laundering, and making false statements during a bankruptcy proceeding, he was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison, where he died on August 19, 2016.

At the time of his death, Pearlman’s net worth had capsized to a negative $400 million.
