India, Say Hello to Tesla (Again?)
Elon Musk once tweeted “India has promise,” and nine years later, he finally delivered—though not with the budget-friendly Model 3, but with the premium Model Y at a wallet-melting price of ₹59.9 to ₹67.9 lakh.
Tesla’s long-awaited arrival to Indian shores has sparked everything from excitement and memes to skepticism and groans. But behind the headlines and showroom selfies lies a bigger question: Can Tesla survive the tax-la reality of India?
First, What’s Actually Happening?
Tesla launched bookings for its Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant via its official India website, with deliveries expected in Q3 FY26. A Long-Range RWD variant will follow in Q4. The launch is being backed by Tesla’s first Experience Center in Mumbai, with Delhi coming next.
The cars are currently fully imported from Shanghai, and no local manufacturing has been confirmed yet. In other words, these are CBU (completely built units)—which means they’re smothered in India’s famous 70–100% import duties.
And thus, you get the meme-worthy price tag.
The Cost of Elon’s Promise
Let’s break it down:
Variant | Price (Ex-showroom) | Approx. Range (WLTP) | Battery Size |
---|---|---|---|
Model Y RWD | ₹59.9 lakh | 500 km | ~60 kWh |
Model Y Long-Range | ₹67.9 lakh | 622 km | ~75 kWh |
Full Self-Driving (FSD) | ₹6 lakh (add-on) | Pending approval | — |
For context, this puts Tesla in the same arena as BMW iX1, Mercedes EQB, and Kia EV6—hardly the mass-market segment.
Also, a budget-conscious Indian buyer could probably buy two Tata Nexon EVs, still have money for a 4BHK EMI in Gurugram, and not worry about an FSD beta that doesn’t recognize potholes.
Tesla’s India Playbook: What’s Working?
- Hype and Brand Power: Let’s not lie—Tesla has a cult following. People who’ve been waiting for years will line up regardless of price.
- Supercharger Rollout: Tesla is already prepping 4 stations each in Mumbai and Delhi, promising faster charging than local EV options.
- Software Edge: Nobody does software in a car like Tesla. OTA updates, Tesla Arcade, Netflix on the dash—Elon is essentially turning your SUV into a gaming console.
…But What’s Not Working?
- Import Duty Pain: India’s love for taxing imports has made Tesla’s Model Y ridiculously expensive. Even luxury EVs feel cheaper in comparison.
- Zero Localisation (for now): Unlike BYD or Tata, Tesla has no local factory (yet). Which means no Make-in-India brownie points or pricing relief.
- Charging Infra Gap: Even with a few superchargers, India’s EV infra is in its toddler phase. Not exactly ideal for 500 km road trips in peak summer.
Twitter Reacts: ‘TAX-LA’ in India
It didn’t take long before Twitter users took to roasting the launch. One user said:
“For 67 lakhs I’d expect the Model Y to levitate over potholes and bless me with stock tips from Elon himself.”
Another joked:
“Model Y’s price in India is higher than Y chromosome representation in Indian Parliament.”
The sarcasm isn’t unfounded. After all, in the U.S., the same Model Y is priced around $43,000 (₹36 lakh)—almost half.
But Wait, Why Now?
- Government Leaning In: Recent EV-friendly policies and possible import duty concessions tied to manufacturing have finally lured Tesla to stop ghosting India.
- Rising Affluence: India’s luxury car segment is growing, especially in metro cities. Mercedes sold a record number of EVs last year. There is a niche, albeit a small one.
- Symbolic Entry: Even if Tesla sells just a few thousand units, it gains brand presence, and a testbed for future localisation and cheaper variants.
Is Model 3 or Model 2 Coming?
There’s speculation that Tesla’s next move may be a locally manufactured, more affordable model—possibly the long-rumored Model 2 (~$25,000 range).
But don’t hold your breath just yet. A local gigafactory or tie-up would take time, land, and bureaucracy. Until then, Musk’s India dreams may remain an elite fantasy.
Final Charge: Tesla in India – Hype or Hope?
Pros:
- Global EV leader finally enters India
- Premium product for early adopters
- Tech-heavy, aspirational brand
Cons:
- Pricing makes it inaccessible for 98% of India
- Still imported; no production base
- Skepticism over long-term commitment
Tesla has finally parked its wheels on Indian soil—but whether it drives deep into the market or just cruises on top as a rich boy’s toy will depend on what comes next. A cheaper model? A factory? Or just memes?
Only time (and Musk’s mood swings) will tell.
