Soma Textiles & Industries Ltd: From Denim Dreams to Delisting Dramas – A Mill That’s More Soap Opera Than Textile


1. At a Glance

Welcome to Soma Textiles, a company where the balance sheet looks like an obituary but the stock chart looks like a Diwali rocket. Once upon a time, they made vintage denim and fabrics for brands like Cherokee and John Players. Now, they’re better known for SEBI bans, promoter exits, and land deals. Despite pathetic sales of ₹10 Cr annually, the stock has run up 154% in the last year. Textile? More like “speculative bubble fabric.”


2. Introduction

Founded in 1969, Soma was one of those ambitious Ahmedabad mills trying to compete with Arvind and Raymond in denim. They did have some solid clients — Reliance Trends, Indigo Nation, Scullers, and Mossimo. But while peers grew into national brands, Soma collapsed under poor sales, management issues, and regulatory controversies.

  • In 2006, they pulled a shady GDR issue that SEBI later flagged in 2021, banning their then-directors for years.
  • In 2012, they entered a land development deal in Rakhial (Ahmedabad) with Shayona Land Corp. Essentially, they pivoted from textiles to real estate monetisation.
  • More recently, promoters decided to sell their 74.98% stake for ₹87.67 Cr, with an open offer at ₹47.14/share. Market, in true desi investor style, ignored the fundamentals and pumped the stock 3x.

In short: Soma is the washed-up Bollywood actor who suddenly trended because of a viral reel, not because of a blockbuster.


3. Business Model (WTF Do They Even Do?)

At face value:

  • Textiles – Denim, piece-dyed fabrics, pearl collection, stretch/non-stretch fabrics. Once upon a time, they even had vintage denim branding. Sales are now barely ₹10 Cr (less than a Raymond showroom).
  • Scrap Sales – 2% of revenue from waste cloth and scrap. At this rate, kabadiwala may become their largest client.
