2. Introduction – The 90-Year-Old That Forgot to Make Money
Orient Paper was incorporated in 1936. That means it has survived World War II, Licence Raj, liberalisation, demonetisation, GST, and multiple commodity cycles.
But apparently, profits are still optional.
The company operates in two segments:
- Paper & Tissue (~84% revenue FY24)
- Chemicals (~16% revenue FY24)
Now, paper is a cyclical commodity. Prices go up. Prices go down. Margins dance like they’re at a wedding in Jaipur.
But here’s the thing.
When the cycle was good in FY23, operating margin was 17%.
In FY25? Negative 2%.
