Orient Paper & Industries Ltd: ₹896 Cr Sales, Tissue Business Fresh… But Profits Flushed
1. At a Glance
Founded in 1936, Orient Paper is the granddaddy of India’s tissue and writing paper game. It’s part of the C.K. Birla Group (yes, the Birlas who make everything from cement to scooters). They pioneered high-quality virgin tissue paper in India — but ironically, their own financials look recycled. FY25 saw ₹896 Cr sales, but profits were so negative even the auditors needed tissues.
2. Introduction
This company is like that class topper who suddenly fails in midlife crisis. Backed by a strong group, with factories, exports, and chemical units, Orient should’ve been a star. Instead, it’s a smallcap struggler trading at 0.38x book value, debt of ₹400 Cr, and contingent liabilities of ₹3,487 Cr (yes, that’s 6x its market cap).
Still, it makes papers and tissues that land in your hands daily — books, notebooks, toilet rolls, exam sheets. Basically, from UPSC prep to heartbreak tears, you’ve met Orient’s products at some point.
3. Business Model (WTF Do They Even Do?)
Orient’s portfolio is a strange buffet:
Wellness & Hygiene: Premium virgin tissue paper (Orient Natura, Bamboo Natura, Platinum). Basically selling “softness” at scale.
Writing & Printing: Buff cover paper, cartridge paper, cone wrapping paper, even thermal base paper. Imagine: your local momo stall’s butter paper could be an Orient product.
Chemicals: Caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, bleaching powder. So they sell both the exam paper and the chemical that makes you cry.
Exports form ~7% of sales, domestic ~93%. Main unit is in Amlai, Madhya Pradesh, capacity ~1.1 lakh TPA paper + tissue.
