Grauer & Weil (India) Ltd Q1 FY26 – From Electroplating Chemicals to Kandivali Malls, This Smallcap Wants to Shine
1. At a Glance
Grauer & Weil (India) Ltd – or Growel, for those who can’t spell “Weil” without autocorrect – is a ₹4,024 Cr market cap cocktail of chemicals, paints, lubricants, engineering turnkey plants, and yes, a shopping mall in Kandivali (Growel’s 101). The stock trades at ₹88.8, about 25% below its 52-week high of ₹120. P/E is a spicy 26.8, higher than the chemical sector median, but ROCE at 23% and ROE at 17.6% make it look like the nerdy topper in your tuition class who still gets bullied for wearing Bata shoes. Debt? Only ₹11.8 Cr – which is basically pocket change. Q1 FY26 saw sales of ₹253 Cr (–4% YoY) and PAT ₹43.6 Cr (–14% YoY). So profits slipped like your chappal in Mumbai rains, but balance sheet strength makes this an interesting smallcap detective case.
2. Introduction
Here’s a company that makes electroplating chemicals, industrial paints, lubricants, effluent treatment plants… and then also runs a mall. It’s like finding out your CA also DJs at weddings.
Founded in 1957, Growel has quietly built itself into India’s only full-stack surface finishing solutions provider, exporting to 50+ countries. That means they can plate your car parts, your aerospace components, your jewellery, and maybe even your neighbour’s nose ring if she’s into electrochemistry.
The company’s revenue pie (FY23) was Surface Finishing 84%, Engineering 10%, and “Shoppertainment” 6%. Yes, they literally use the word “shoppertainment,” proving that even chemical companies can sound like PVR Cinemas on a sugar high. Despite the mall distraction, their real money comes from chemicals, paints, and oils. With capex plans of ₹176 Cr through FY26 to expand electroplating and paints, Growel seems more focused than its name suggests.
Question: Do you trust a company that makes rust-preventive oils AND runs a Kandivali mall? Or is this diversification just corporate ADHD?
3. Business Model – WTF Do They Even Do?
Let’s decode this buffet menu:
Electroplating Chemicals & Surface Finishing: Pretreatments, coatings, passivation, precious metals. Basically, they make boring metal surfaces look glamorous and corrosion-proof.
High Performance Coatings: Marine, aerospace, architectural. If your warship or office lift doesn’t rust, thank Growel.
Industrial Lubricants: Cutting oils, hydraulic oils, rust preventive. The WD-40 of Indian industry.
Engineering Division: Turnkey plants for electroplating, effluent treatment, painting lines. Basically, they’ll sell you the chemicals and the kitchen sink to apply them.
Mall (Growel’s 101, Kandivali East): Because why not? When your chemicals business gets boring, run a mall with multiplexes and McDonald’s.
Exports are ~6% (USA, Canada, LatAm, Africa), domestic 94%. Low global footprint compared to SRF or Tata Chem, but a strong India presence.
