The 14th-Largest Indian Pharma Company That’s Secretly Building Something Global

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals is one of those weird Indian pharma companies that nobody mentions at dinner parties but everyone in the industry respects. It’s the 14th largest player in India (IQVIA rank). The 15th biggest by generic prescriptions filled in the USA. Fifth in Europe. Operating across 80 countries. And for the past 5 years, it’s been quietly building a specialty and oncology portfolio while simultaneously generating hard cash from generics.

Q3 FY26 (December quarter): Consolidated revenue at ₹39,006 million, up 15.1% YoY. Quarterly profit at ₹403 crore, up 55.2% YoY. EPS at ₹14.29 (annualized: ₹57.16). And here’s the kicker — in September 2025, AbbVie just wrote them a $700 million upfront cheque for exclusive global rights to their cancer asset ISB 2001. Not a partnership. Not a loan. Cash. Three Revenue Streams, One Overarching Strategy

The Generics Grind: Glenmark makes unbranded copies of existing drugs (after patents expire). India generics. North America (USA/Canada). Europe. Emerging markets. This segment is 70-75% of revenue — steady, competitive, mature. Profit margins: 18-22%. Growth rate: 4-6% annually. Competitive advantage: scale, cost structure, regulatory approvals. Weakness: commoditizing. Anyone with an USFDA factory can do this.

Specialty & Branded: Here’s where Glenmark acts like it’s Swiss or German. They own branded respiratory products (RYALTRIS for allergic rhinitis, respiratory launches in India). Dermatology (WINLEVI for acne, JABRYUS for atopic dermatitis). Metabolic (Lirafit biosimilar for diabetes). Growing 20%+ annually. Margins: 40-50%+. This is the future play.

Innovation/Licensing: Via subsidiary Ichnos Sciences, Glenmark is now licensing out cancer and autoimmune molecules to global pharma majors. ISB 2001 (oncology, Phase I) was just licensed to AbbVie for $700 million upfront + potential milestones. Trastuzumab Rezetecan licensed from Hengrui for ~$18 million upfront. Aumolertinib (EGFR inhibitor) licensed globally. These deals generate milestone payments AND margin accretion as the company commercializes in licensed territories.

The Margin Plot Twist: Revenue up 15.1%, profit up 55.2%. That’s not linear math — that’s mix improvement + operating leverage. OPM compressed from 23.2% to 22.3% YoY, but that’s because of one-time items (US settlements: $37.75 million in Q3). Strip those out, core OPM is actually stable. The PAT jump is 55.2% because of “currency depreciation across key geographies” (per management). FX was a tailwind. When it reverses, margins will normalise.
