1. At a Glance – Frozen Shrimp, Boiling Drama
₹322 crore market cap. ₹48.1 share price. 3-month return of 4.95%. Stock P/E at 20.8 vs industry P/E of 23.8. Book value ₹40.5. Debt sitting at ₹417 crore. ROE? A humble 1.71%. ROCE? 4.61%.
And then suddenly… Q3 FY26 sales at ₹302.65 crore and PAT at ₹7.09 crore, up 264% YoY.
This is Coastal Corporation Ltd — a 100% export-oriented shrimp processor that decided exporting prawns was not dramatic enough, so it added ethanol manufacturing to the story. Because why stick to seafood when you can distill alcohol too?
Quarterly sales jumped 64.9%. Quarterly profit jumped 263.6%. But zoom out and you see 5-year sales growth of just 0.78% and ROE stuck in low single digits.
So what’s happening here? Is this a turnaround? A tariff survivor? Or a company juggling shrimp, ethanol, and bank loans like a circus act?
Let’s open the freezer door.
2. Introduction – From Prawns to Petrol
Founded in 1981, Coastal Corporation has spent over four decades doing one thing very well — processing and exporting shrimp. Mostly to the USA. In fact, around 83–84% of revenue comes from the US market.
Yes. One country. One product. One giant geopolitical risk.
Then the US imposed tariffs. First countervailing duties. Then reciprocal tariffs. Because international trade sometimes behaves like a reality TV show.
Did Coastal panic? No. They diversified into Japan, Korea, China, Russia, Europe. Signed agreements with Toyo Reizo (Mitsubishi Corporation group) and SPC GFS Korea.
And then — plot twist — they built a 198 KLPD ethanol plant in Odisha through their subsidiary Coastal Biotech.
Because apparently shrimp wasn’t volatile enough.
Now the company has:
- Three shrimp processing units in Andhra Pradesh
- One ethanol plant in Odisha
- A US subsidiary (Seacrest Seafoods Inc.)
- And ₹417 crore of debt
You see the pattern?
This isn’t just a seafood story. This is a capital allocation experiment.
Are we looking at smart diversification… or unrelated adventure tourism in business form?
3. Business Model – WTF Do They Even Do?
Let’s simplify.
Coastal buys shrimp from farmers in Andhra Pradesh. They process it — peel, devein, freeze, cook, pack — and export it mainly to the US.
Products include:
- Vannamei shrimp
- Black Tiger shrimp
- IQF frozen products
