2. Introduction – A Trader That Doesn’t Trade

Incorporated in 1956, STC was once the government’s official import-export warrior. Rice, wheat, sugar, bullion, fertilisers, petrochemicals — if it moved across borders, STC had a file on it.

Today?

No new trading activity since November 2020.

It now functions as a non-operative company under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Rental income from surplus office space at JVB building is its main source of survival.

Imagine opening a restaurant and then deciding to earn money by renting out the kitchen.

Even more dramatic — its accounts are classified as NPA by lender banks. The consortium has dragged the company to the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT). STC is negotiating a ₹ 200 crore One Time Settlement (OTS) as per latest board outcome.

And wait, that’s not all.

Auditors have flagged:

  • Doubtful receivables of ₹ 1,07,125.27 lacs
  • Previously flagged receivables of ₹ 1,72,533.71 lacs
  • Short provisions of ₹ 1,06,982.54 lacs
