Focus Lighting & Fixtures Ltd: “From Spotlight Glory to Power-Cut Profits”

1. At a Glance

Focus Lighting makes LEDs that promise to light up homes, retail stores, and occasionally railway berths. But in Q1 FY26, profits fell harder than a bulb during Diwali surge: ₹42 Cr sales (-25% YoY), ₹2.16 Cr PAT (-76% YoY). At a P/E of 77x, this stock is priced like a luxury chandelier but currently glowing like a 10W bulb.

2. Introduction

Incorporated in 2005, Focus Lighting is that scrappy LED maker trying to fight Dixon and Havells with branded offerings like Array Pro, Dione Cove, EOS, Magnus, Perdu (sounds like an EDM festival, not lighting).

The strategy is simple:

  • 98% of revenues from retail & home lighting → malls, showrooms, and homes.
  • 2% from infrastructure & railways → façade lighting and train berth lamps, probably bought only when Indian Railways remembers passengers need to read.

After years of being India-centric, Focus pulled a dramatic pivot—India share shrank to 60% FY24 vs 87% FY22, while Dubai + Singapore now make up 40%. Translation: NRIs want fancy lights too, but logistics invoices glow brighter than profits.

Top clients include BMW, TATA Motors, Muji, Diesel—so at least the brand recall is premium. But catch: top 10 clients = 53% of FY24 revenues, which means if just one big showroom switches suppliers, Focus goes dark.

3. Business Model – WTF Do They Even Do?

  • Retail/Home Lighting (98%): Spotlights, downlights, decorative fittings. Basically, the “Insta-filter” for stores like Guess & Kenneth Cole.
  • Infra/Railways (2%): Low share but high prestige—façade lights for tourist attractions and railway coaches.
  • Brands: Plus Light Tech, Trix, Lumens & Beyond—sounds fancy, but the real USP is custom design.
  • Global Reach:
    • India – 60%
    • Dubai – 25%
    • Singapore – 15%
  • Partnerships:
    • Bartenbach GmbH → optics, lenses.
    • L&B → IoT-driven, Bluetooth lights.

Think of it as a boutique lighting boutique—niche products, high design, thin volumes.
