Swiggy Ltd: ₹16,966 Cr Sales, ₹3,704 Cr Loss – “Zomato ka bhai, par gym membership bhi lena hoga”
1. At a Glance
Swiggy – the company that turned “Beta, ghar pe khana hai?” into “Beta, delivery boy raste mein hai.” From charging us ₹50 for rain surcharge to convincing us that paying ₹899 yearly for “free delivery” is logical, Swiggy has mastered the art of burning cash while feeding India. Listed in November 2024, it raised a fat ₹11,327 Cr, but FY25 still closed with a ₹3,704 Cr loss. Basically, it’s the Ambani of discounts and the Rahul Gandhi of profitability – good intent, but results? Abhi pending.
2. Introduction
Once upon a time in 2014, two hungry techies in Bengaluru thought – “Why cook when you can make someone else ride a scooter for it?” And thus, Swiggy was born. Fast forward a decade – the app has become India’s second most important relationship after WhatsApp. Ordering food at 2 AM, groceries in 10 minutes, or sending a pen drive across the city – Swiggy has ensured India never leaves its sofa.
But here’s the twist: every delivery costs them more than what they earn. Their FY24 GOV (Gross Order Value) was mind-blowing: ₹2.47 lakh Cr in food and ₹80,685 Cr in quick commerce. Yet the “Cost of Delivery” is 14% of GOV in food and 9.5% in groceries, while delivery fee collected is a puny 3% and 1.2%. Translation: For every paneer butter masala, Swiggy is eating the loss, not you.
Still, investors lined up for its IPO, probably because “growth story” sounds sexier than “profit story.” The market gave it a ₹1 lakh Cr market cap. Why? Because India’s population doesn’t stop eating, and startups don’t stop dreaming.
Question for you: Have you ever ordered from Swiggy Genie just to avoid talking to your neighbour?
3. Business Model (WTF Do They Even Do?)
Swiggy isn’t just about delivering cold samosas. It’s now a hyperlocal commerce empire:
Food Delivery (49% of revenue): Restaurants pay 15–25% commission, users pay “rain tax,” and ads pay extra cash. GOV FY24 = ₹2.47 lakh Cr.
Quick Commerce – Instamart (9%): Groceries in 10 mins via 605 dark stores. GOV FY24 = ₹80,685 Cr. Basically, the reason your Kirana uncle now hates his life.
Supply Chain (39%): Warehousing + distribution = 2.66 mn sq ft. Not sexy, but money is money.
Out-of-Home (1.3%): Dineout bookings & SteppinOut events – because why just eat at home when you can overpay outside too.
Platform Innovations (1.7%): Genie, Minis, Cloud kitchens. Testing waters like a failed IITian testing multiple career options.
Swiggy also milks loyalty with Swiggy One membership – 5.7 mn members by FY24. That’s 5.7 mn Indians tricked into believing they’re saving money by spending more.
